Overview
The iHEAR AffirmCare project is dedicated to promoting LGBTQIA+ inclusive and affirmative healthcare within medical colleges in Kerala. The initiative focuses on educating medical educators about LGBTQIA+ affirmative healthcare, fostering collaborations between medical colleges and LGBTQIA+ community organizations, and raising awareness among medical students about LGBTQIA+ inclusion.
Rationale
Despite Kerala being one of the most literate states in India, ignorance and prejudice against LGBTQIA+ individuals are pervasive. Many transgender people, for instance, face high rates of unemployment and school dropout due to bullying and harassment. Building on the successes of our previous project, Doctors for Equity, which implemented LGBTQIA+ affirmative health competencies through consultations and training sessions in Northern India, AffirmCare aims to address these challenges in Kerala and improve the health outcomes for the LGBTQIA+ community by enhancing medical education and fostering supportive environments within medical institutions.
Progress Till Date
The AffirmCare project is in its initial stages. We are preparing to host our first online consultation with community members to ensure the project’s cultural relevance and gather insights directly from those affected. This consultation will help tailor our training and educational materials to better serve the specific needs of the LGBTQIA+ community in Kerala.
