Overview
The iHEAR RainbowMed project focuses on the implementation of LGBTQIA+ affirmative competencies by conducting a series of sensitization workshops for medical educators in Western India. These competencies are further refined through consultations with community members and medical educators. The project aims to create an inclusive healthcare environment that addresses the unique needs of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Rationale
The LGBTQIA+ community in India faces significant health inequities due to a lack of awareness and sensitivity within the healthcare system. Building on our earlier work with the iHEAR Doctors for Equity project, which successfully hosted national-level consultations and training sessions at medical colleges in Northern India, RainbowMed seeks to expand these efforts in Central and Western India. This project aims to bridge existing gaps by equipping medical educators in with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide affirmative care. Through workshops and consultations, we strive to create a more inclusive and equitable healthcare system.
Progress Till Date
So far, RainbowMed has successfully conducted one workshop at Gandhi Medical College in Bhopal, an online workshop, and an in-person consultation with community members in Bhopal. Each of these workshops also included comprehensive consultations with both community members and medical educators to ensure that the competencies are effectively integrated and meet the needs of the LGBTQIA+ community. These initial efforts have laid a strong foundation for further progress and engagement in our mission to create an inclusive healthcare environment.
