Overview

The study looked into the challenges faced by transgender, non-binary, and gender diverse (TGD) individuals in India when trying to access healthcare. TGD community members were part of the research team, and also gave inputs through consultative workshops organized once in 2-3 months during the project period. Researchers talked to 63 TGD individuals across India between May and September 2021. These interviews were recorded and analysed line by line.

Rationale

While TGD communities are at a higher risk for health problems, they encounter difficulties in getting routine medical services. Previous research mainly focused on HIV and gender-affirming care, but this study aimed to understand broader issues, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study was one of the first-of-its-kind and largest qualitative studies conducted in India with TGD communities, shedding light on the challenges faced by diverse TGD persons and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health.
