BRAINTOOLS

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Sangath’s Braintools project is aligned with the international priority of ensuring that all children thrive and achieve their full developmental potential. Braintools has been conceptualised as the first step of an integrated long-term program for research to identify the infant brain markers that predict neurodevelopmental outcomes in Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMIC).

LOCATION

PROJECT DURATION

1st March 2018 – 28th February 2019

PROJECT GOAL

Aim

  • To assess early childhood brain development in low-resource settings.
  • To collaboratively develop a protocol for assessing targeted features of human functional brain development in Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMIC) settings.
  • To bring Brain Science to the LMIC community through the identification of resources for adaptation of new intervention tools targeted at infants and young children.

Outcomes

  • Protocol for assessing human functional brain development
  • Portable electroencephalography (EEG) to measure the a) social brain and b) attentional control in preschool children
  • 40 typically developing children assessed twice each using EEG and eye-tracking
  • Interviews conducted with families to assess the acceptability of the Braintools toolkit

KEY IMPACT

We demonstrate for the first time the acceptability of conducting neurodevelopmental assessments using concurrent EEG and eye-tracking in preschool children in uncontrolled community LMIC settings. This kind of research appears to be acceptable to the community and we identify potential barriers and facilitators of this research, thus allowing for future large scale research projects to be conducted investigating neurodevelopment and risk factors for suboptimal development in LMICs.
