Adult

Mental health problems affect a significant portion of the adult population. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 20% of adults worldwide experience a mental health disorder in any given year. In India alone, the National Mental Health Survey 2016 reported that approximately 13.7% of the adult population suffers from some form of mental health disorder.

Untreated mental health issues in adults can have severe consequences on their lives including experiencing difficulties in personal relationships, work performance, and daily functions to contributing to physical health problems, leading to a vicious cycle of declining well-being if left unaddressed.

At Sangath, we are committed to making a difference in adult mental health through developing evidence based psychosocial interventions and creating innovating models of care through task sharing and innovating and implementing cutting edge digital solutions in mental health and their integration in existing health systems and platforms of care. We also believe in the power of community outreach, sensitisation and engaging various stakeholders to raise awareness about adult mental health and the issues they face.

KEY ONGOING PROJECTS

IMPACT-T

To bridge the mental health treatment gap in India, IMPACT, Sangath’s research project aims to examine the feasibility and acceptability of the integration of telepsychiatry into primary care services. It will give insights into the acceptability of telepsychiatry and its impact on the end-users. On a broader scale, IMPACT has the potential to inform the further investigation of the intervention through a randomised controlled trial and may have an impact on the policy landscape of India and similar countries.

KHUSHEE-MAMTA

The Mata Jai Kaur led Khushee Mamta or ‘Happy Motherhood’ program recruits and trains local women as lay (non-specialist) counsellors. The counsellors provide counselling services for expectant and new mothers with perinatal depression and anxiety.

IMPRESS

Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide and accounts for about 40% of the disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) attributable to mental and substance use disorders. Present estimates suggest that the prevalence of depression in India is 2.7%, and the treatment gap stands at 85%.

EMPOWER

EMPOWER seeks to address these challenges by building on growing research showing that digital training and supervision are acceptable, cheaper and potentially as effective as traditional approaches.
